Présentation du projet
Presentation of the project

  • permettre de lever certaines ambiguïtés entre les mots utilisés par les compositeurs ou les auditeurs (le vocabulaire) et les faits concrets auxquels ils se rapportent ;
  • servir à d'éléments pour étudier les variations dans la perception et la représentation mentale qu'on a à l'écoute de sons-espaces, à partir de commentaires d'écoutes ;
  • constituer une base pour une réflexion sur les outils permettant de traiter les espaces sonores ;
  • ...

Second action after the inventory of the "actors of space", we have launced in the beginning of 2005 a call for collaboration for all the composers or researchers who were interested to make somes ounds examples.
The objective was, and is always, to gather sound or musical examples (according to interpretation that one has some…) which highlights certain relevant characteristics of the sound-spaces relations.
The question was difficult (and the formulation not very incentive …), and the time necessary to make these examples as to the essential reflection which accompany them has certainly been a problem for most people…
Since there has been a very low number of answers, the project, in its initial form, was abandoned.
The existence of such a catalog, inevitably non exhaustive, could nevertheless :
- allow to clarify certain ambiguities between the words used by the composers or the listeners (the vocabulary) and the concrete facts to which they are referred ;
- be used a elements to study the variations in perception and the mental representation that one has while listening sound-spaces, starting from comments of listenings ;
- constitute a base for a reflection on the tools used to process sound spaces...

L'état actuel
The current state

A first realization in the form of a data CD, composed of not compressed files comprising from 5 to 8 channels, must be available before the end of the year.
This format has been choosen rather than a CD-DTS because these examples are intended for the moment for only a “professional” usage, and they will be generally listened in studio, with conventional computer equipements.
The playing of these files can thus be done without decoding constraints nor software and material compatibility problems, and with the best possible sound quality.

This first catalog is made by Jean-Marc Duchenne, according to his research on the criteria of space presented on the Multiphonie site. More information will be presented in good time…

A second realization must be initiated in 2007 with a group of composers (five or six), and to give place this time to a gathering DVD of the sound objects being able to have to 16 channels compatible with the 22.2 standard, that can be listened in studio, accompanied by a pentaphonic zone (encoded in DTS) which can be played on any consumer 5.1 system.
